TAXES for STUDENTS

Tax season is upon us and can be daunting for everyone, especially students. Even if you are not working if you pay rent, heating bills, or property taxes you may still want to file as you are eligible for some tax credits. Here are a few resources to help make the processes easier:

  • For individuals making less than $35,000 a year, and families making less than $53,000 The Accounting Aid Society provides free income tax preparation services. You can learn more at http://accountingaidsociety.org or call (313) 556-1920 for more information.
  • Looking to do your taxes yourself? If you make $31,000 or less you can complete online filing of federal, state and city taxes for free through TurboTax Freedom Edition
  • myfreetaxes.com (Sponsored by the Walmart Foundation — in cooperation with Goodwill Industries International, National Disability Institute, and United Way ) provides free federal and state filing for individuals making under $60,000 a year.
